Mountain View's Plastic Bag Ban in Effect Monday

This Earth Day, April 22, don't forget to bring your own bag to the grocery or clothing store.

On this Earth Day, Mountain View joins several other cities in the Bay Area, including neighboring Sunnyvale, to enact a ban on the use of plastic bags at retailers and grocers city-wide.

Restaurants and non-profits like Goodwill remain the exception.

Leading up to this event, area shoppers were greeted with table top tents on the cash registers of all supermarkets, liquor stores and shopping outlets. As the date approached, signs were pitched in grassy parking lots.

The displays illustrate that no plastic bags will be given out starting on Earth Day. Paper bags will be available at a cost of 10 cents. However, there's no charge to use reusable bags.

In a previous article, one Patch one reader—not happy with the ban—does remind shoppers that now they'll need to wash or clean their reusable bags often to avoid cross-contamination. Others pointed out that they did reuse plastic bags, and now they'll have to buy trash bags.

Another reader listed suggestions of reusable bags that could be purchased for use that are made in the Bay Area.

The ordinance was approved by the Mountain View City Council on Dec. 4, 2012.
