NASA Ames Wins Environmental Award

The award ceremony will take place at Mountain View's Intuit campus on May 30.

The federal government's most "green" building continues to bring recognition to NASA Ames.

Recently Acterra, a Bay Area non-profit announced that the NASA Ames Research Center would receive its 2013 Business Environmental Award in the category of 'Sustainable Built Environment' for its high-performing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum facility, named Sustainability Base.

"Sustainability Base is one of the most impressive buildings ever constructed," said Steven Zornetzer, associate director for research and technology at Ames. "It is a showcase for our twin goals of providing a comfortable and desirable workplace for our staff, while advancing the science and art of managing intelligent buildings."

Completed in 2012, the Sustainability Base new building has 432 solar photovoltaic and thermal panels angled to collect as much sunlight as possible all year long. It combines the natural, passive and 'native to place' features of its location with forward-looking technologies to optimize energy efficiency and minimize resource consumption.

Acterra's Business Environmental Awards, initiated in 1990, have been considered a heavyweight among award programs, due to its rigorous application and judging process.

"Our awardees participate in a thorough vetting process through which they demonstrate their environmental commitment and accomplishments," explained Committee Chair Laura Teksler. "By the time they are selected to receive recognition, our awardees have truly proven that their programs are exemplary examples of corporate environmental leadership."

Ames will be honored at the 2013 Business Environmental Awards Reception on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Intuit Corporation, Mountain View, Calif.
