Unemployment Down to 5.5% in Mountain View
More people in the Bay Area employed, but rate flat for state.
Unemployment rates declined in many Bay Area Counties in December and held steady statewide, state data released Friday shows.
California's unemployment rate remained unchanged from November at 9.8 percent, and was distinctly down from the 11.2 percent rate seen a year ago in December, according to the California Employment Development Department.
Mountain View's rate fell 0.2 percent from 5.7 percent in November to 5.5 percent in December 2012. That's a decrease of 0.9 percent from the rate of 6.4 percent in December 2011.

Unemployment rates declined in several Bay Area counties, which have consistently had the lowest unemployment rates in the state in recent years.
Santa Clara County's unemploymemt rate fell from 7.7 percent in November to 7.5 percent in December.

Marin County, which had the lowest unemployment rate in December in the state at 5.5 percent, dropped from 5.8 percent in November. San Mateo County, which had the second lowest unemployment rate in the state in December at 6.0 percent, declined from 6.3 percent in November. In San Francisco, the unemployment rate declined from 6.7 percent in November to 6.5 percent in December, the third lowest unemployment rate in the state.
Alameda County also declined, from 8.5 percent in November to 8.2 percent in December, and Contra Costa County showed a slight decline from 8.3 to 8.2 percent.
According to staffing agency Robert Half, "companies are hiring professionals with specialized skills who can help organizations meet growing business demand."
Below are some in-demand positions with unemployment rates below the state and national average:
- Database Administrators – 1.5 percent
- Financial Analysts – 1.9 percent
- Budget Analysts – 2.6 percent
- Software developers, applications and systems software – 2.9 percent
- Accountants and Auditors – 4.6 percent
- Network and computer systems administrators: 4.3 percent
While the unemployment rate in California sits at 9.8 percent, the unemployment rate for in-demand positions within the finance and IT sector are as low as 3 to 4 percent.
