Purple and white billboards dotted the landscape of Shoreline Boulevard and La Avenida Street inviting local neighbors and employees to the annual Alzheimer's Association barbecue fundraiser on Thursday in Mountain View.

Every year around the end of summer, the Northern California/Northern Nevada Alzheimer’s Association Chapter holds its annual barbecue and raffle to help raise awareness about the disease.

Although this is not its biggest event, Ericka Smith, director of special events, noted that it's important on a local scale,  because it “raises awareness within the neighborhood and gives our neighbors an opportunity to learn more.”

The staff divides into two fundraising teams to raise money for the “Walk.” The barbecue is a joint effort by both teams to get the word out and spread awareness. It is also a springboard to upcoming events. According to Smith, “it kicks everyone into gear for the Walk.”

Funds raised from the barbecue and raffle will be put toward the 18th annual "Walk to End Alzheimer's" in San Francisco on Sept. 24 and the 4th annual "Walk to End Alzheimer's" in San Jose is Oct. 15.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's disease is the largest underfunded public health threat facing the nation, and it's growing at an epidemic rate. The disease attacks the brain, and its most common form is dementia. Last year’s San Francisco and San Jose walks raised more than $1.4 million for research funding.
