For Ware Family, Still No Closure a Year After Death

Skid marks still remain on the Mountain View sidewalk a few feet from where William Ware waited for a bus a year ago on June 21.

"We can't believe it's been a year," said Dolores Marquez, niece of the deceased. "I still remember aunt Barbara call me up to say, 'he's gone.'"

Ware died on the scene after the vehicle driven by Mountain View 21-year-old Matthew Pumar ran into him near the intersection of California Street and Escuela Avenue. Pumar has been charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

"We can't get any closure," she said, "because the case continues to get delayed."

Marquez plans to visit the bus stop this Friday in memory of her uncle, who rode the Valley Transit Authority buses throughout the county. Several VTA bus drivers even attended the funeral. In his honor, VTA installed a plaque on the replacement bench.

"We want to keep his memory alive, but it's been hard for us," said Marquez. "Today I visited the Legacy.com site and read the comments that people left. It's like reliving that day."

It's been as difficult for the widow, Barbara Ware, who's decided to move closer to her family in Southern California. They would have been married for 22 years, Marquez explained.

"It's been very hard for her," she said adding that Barbara has her husband's ashes in a beautiful urn. "That was her life, especially as someone with special needs, because that's all she knew."
