Goodbye But Not Forgotten

My "go-to" place downtown is closing next month. Sadly, my favorite eating place will be gone.

One of my favorite downtown haunts, , is closing next month. The end of yet another thing I savor; it’s been my “go-to” place for years.

Luckily, I wrote a restaurant review shortly after it opened ten years ago. I discovered I loved the food, the ambiance and the staff and celebrated many milestones there with friends and family—birthdays, rehearsal dinners, graduations and holidays. Happy, fun-filled memories all. I was seldom disappointed.

But all good things must end—or so the saying goes. That, unfortunately, is true.

One childhood ending stands out. We had a playhouse in our backyard that my dad built. I loved it, but one day he turned it into a garden shed and that ended my special hideaway. I was heartbroken.

During my single years, boyfriends broke up with me and I with them. Each time it happened I told myself that that person wasn’t the "one" I was looking for, wasn’t my Prince Charming. Each time it happened, I remember feeling rather sad things ended.

After landing my first real job, I bought Capezio shoes. Sexy heels with sling-back straps. Extravagant on my budget, but the minute I laid eyes on them I knew I had to own them. I couldn’t wait to wear them. I never got the chance—my dog gnawed the heels to a nub. That was the end of my shoes. (It was months before I was able to throw them away.)

I’ve lost contact with people because one or the other of us moved. It’s hard to leave friends. You promise you’ll stay in touch, and often you do, but not always. One day you come to the realization that life has changed; the day-to-day connection you used to have has ended.

When Zucca’s closes next month, my hangout will be gone. I know I’ll find a replacement, but it won’t be easy. In the meantime, Zucca’s kitchen is still in operation. Have you tasted their lamb shanks or hanger steak? You still have time. But hurry.

There’s another saying: Don’t cry because something is over. Smile because it happened. Good luck, Praveen, with whatever lies ahead, and thanks for making me smile all these years. I’ll miss you.
