MOM TALK: Gifts Galore!

Find unique and affordable gifts for kids in Mountain View.

In our house, the gift-giving season didn’t end after the holidays this year.

February seemed to be birthday season. My son attended five parties last month, each one filled with cake, candy and presents.

I have discovered there is a better way to shop for children’s gifts than the last-minute method I have always used. In my search for gifts that are both unique and affordable, I have made some unlikely finds while I am already out and about.

Consider the following options for finding the perfect gift on a budget in Mountain View:

  • : It has a tremendous selection of books and an abundant clearance section toward the back of the store. It is always filled with children’s books and craft projects. Located at 301 Castro St.
  • : If you know a child that is interested in magic or all things mystical, you can find beautiful stones and trinkets at East West. Located at 324 Castro St.
  • : Stop in for the coffee and do some shopping while you wait. This shop gets in new merchandise regularly, so the selection varies from time to time. I have purchased about a dozen themed scratch-and-sketch books for my son’s friends over the years, and they have always been well received. Located at 425 N. Whisman Rd.
  • : If you know a child who loves making jewelry, a gift certificate or a carefully selected assortment of stones from Global Beads makes the perfect gift. Located at 345 Castro St.
  • : There is more than just a great selection of books here. BookBuyers offers games, craft projects, movies, music, calendars and journals. Located at 317 Castro St.
  • : The clearance section at Michael’s offers tons of items that can be put together to create a gift basket. Combine a coloring book and a small craft project with a sweet treat and fill up a reusable container, such as a sand pail. Located at 2415 Charleston Rd.

If you are interested in giving a more eco-friendly gift, consider something homemade. Create a gift certificate redeemable for an all-day playdate where you take your child and their friend to the zoo, swimming and/or a picnic. This is affordable and creates a memorable experience for everyone (and no box or wrapping paper needed!).
