The Act of Dreaming

Struggles for many immigrant students may come to an end with the passage of this bill.

The Dream Act passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday, and for those of you who don't know, it's a bill that would give the opportunity for legal residency to illegal immigrants who have graduated from college in this country or have served in the U.S. military.

Obviously, there are more requirements, but that is just a short summary of what the Dream Act would allow.

I believe it is an amazing opportunity for students who have goals and dreams of attending four-year universities but are prevented because of their status.

I have never had to deal with legal status issues, so I can can only imagine how hard it must be. But I do have many friends and family members who have had to give up their education to find a job and save money to pay for community college—or who are already giving up in high school, because they know how unlikely it is that they'll get to go on to a four-year college.

Many people say that if you really want to go to college, there is nothing that will stop you. Yet, they don't realize that not every good student receives a full scholarship, and not every student's parents have enough money to pay for a four-year university. Yes, there might be students fortunate enough to receive full scholarships, but unfortunately, those are only a few.

This is why when I found out about the Dream Act, I was really excited for the doors that could open for those immigrant students who have dreamed of going to college but have been prevented by the many obstacles they have.

I hope the U.S. Senate passes the Dream Act, because we are now closer to making the American dream come true for everyone in the United States.
