The Week Ahead: Film Festival Showcasing 30 Films from 30 Countries

A look ahead at some of this week's featured events in Mountain View.

1. The Fourth Annual Silicon Valley African Film Festival will showcase more than 30 films from 30 countries, featuring a mix of feature films, animations and shorts.

Highlights of the festival include opening and closing ceremonies, an African Market, and the African Women in Technology Forum.

The festival is presented by Oriki Theater in partnership with the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA). The mission of the festival is to promote an understanding and appreciation of Africa and Africans through moving images.

The three-day event, which opens Friday, will be held at the  Community School of Music and Arts (230 San Antonio Circle).

2. Breakthrough Silicon Valley is hosting a benefit for its six-year academic enrichment program that provides a path to college for motivated but underserved middle and high school students.

This event will be held at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose (201 South Market Street) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Admission is $100.

3. The city of Palo Alto is urging anyone headed to Palo Alto Unified District school this week to do what they can to lighten their carbon footprint on their way there.

The city is asking students, teachers, administrators and parents to take alternatives to solo driving during its Oct. 7-11 commemoration of "Palo Alto Walks and Rolls Week."

The city is encouraging walking, cycling, skating, carpooling and public transportation among the preferred options.

The annual Palo Alto event is in its 20th year.
