William Ware Gets a Commemorative Plaque on Mountain View Bus Bench

The Valley Transit Authority installs the plaque on what would have been the deceased man's 51st birthday.

William Ware rode the bus—a lot.

Ware rode the bus so much he not only knew which Valley Transit Authority (VTA) bus lines went where, but he also knew and became friends with a lot of the bus drivers.

Many of those drivers attended and spoke at his funeral.

"I am sorry for the family's loss and hope that you find that VTA has given proper honor to Mr. Ware," Patrick Griffin, a VTA spokesperson, wrote to Dolores Marques after the installation that morning.

Marques, Ware's niece, couldn't take in the sight until the evening. But she arrived with flowers and balloons to look at the "beautiful" bench.

"It was special that this was installed on his birthday," Marques said.

The trial against Matthew Pumar, charged with felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, starts on Monday, Mar. 18 at 9 a.m. at Superior Courthouse in Palo Alto.
