Grab and Go: A Children's Book Reading and a Chance to See the Sun Up Close

Also head to a city-wide garage sale and a youth symphony performance with the kid's this weekend.

Where/When: , 301 Castro St., Mountain View, Saturday, 5 p.m. 

Why Go: It's Tales and Treats Storytime. But this Saturday, there will be a real treat for the kids. Local author Sue Fliess will read from her new picture book, Shoes For Me. It's the story of a young hippo who suddenly realizes her feet have grown—and because she is growing up, she gets to pick out her own shoes! There will be snacks for the kids and an activity or two (probably involving shoes!).

Where/When:  , 250 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto, Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Why Go: Palo Alto has the right idea. Keep good items that can be reused and don't send them to the landfill. The Palo Alto Citywide Yard Sale will give people a chance to repurpose the things they are tired of ... and get a chance to see if somebody else's old belongings are just what they have been seeking. So join in the fun and the hunt. There are bound to be some terrific bargains. Where/When: The Tech Museum, 201 S. Market St., San Jose, Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: If you've wanted to take your kids to the Tech Museum, this may be the weekend to do so, especially of you are a Bank of America cardholder. If you have a Bank of America debit or credit card, you can get one free admission ticket when you show it with your photo ID at the museum.

Pricing: One free ticket, $10 additional tickets

Where/When: , 12345 S El Monte Rd, Los Altos Hills, Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

Why Go: The Foothill Observatory is open for public viewing every clear Saturday morning. Visitors to these daytime programs can view details of the sun through special safe solar filters. Check out the sun from a different perspective. (Please note that the observatory is closed when the weather is cloudy). 

Where/When: , 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd. Cupertino, Sunday, 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Hear this performance by El Camino Youth Symphony and you will be astounded by just how well these youth musicians can play. The program includes solo performances from Pavitra Rengarajan and Timothy Yu.
