For animal lovers, spring and summer in Silicon Valley are known as "kitten season."

It’s the time of year when shelters like Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) are flooded with litters of unwanted, homeless kittens. HSSV saw an influx of more than 1,300 kittens in 2010 -- over 1,400 in 2011.

Most of those little balls of fur showed up during kitten season. People bring them in by the dozens: in shoe boxes, crates and laundry baskets.  Too many kittens come in and not enough adopters are available to provide safe, happy homes.

Since February is National Spay Neuter Month, it’s a great time to tell the story of HSSV’s “Beat The Heat” campaign – which focuses on getting cats spayed before kitten season begins.   Humane Society Silicon Valley is a Spay and Neuter expert.  Our specialized experience ensures lower risk and safer, more consistent outcomes.  Our well-trained staff takes the time to fully explain the procedures and make it easy for pet owners to help their pets through aftercare.   NEED AN EXPERT OPINION?  Dr. Julia Lewis, HSSV’S Chief Veterinary Officer, is available for interviews to discuss:   ·         How spaying and neutering helps prevent behavior problems.  Dr. Julia is deeply aware of the challenges faced by owners of unaltered male and female pets, and how spaying and neutering helps with many pet behavior issues. ·         How members of the community can safely bring kittens and cats to HSSV. Our Receiving Desk accepts animals 24-7 with no questions asked. ·         Kitten overpopulation in Silicon Valley occurs every spring.  HSSV is leading county-wide efforts to reduce the staggering numbers of unwanted kittens.  Last year, HSSV reported a 41% increase in pet spay/neuter surgeries in February 2011 over February 2010.  This is good news because in just seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce more than 300,000 kittens!  ·         Common misconceptions about spaying or neutering a pet.  Let Dr. Julia debunk the myths: “My animal is purebred,” “I don’t want my pet to get fat and lazy,” or “I want my dog to be protective.”  ·         The HSSV Medical Center’s experience and expertise gives us the ability to perform surgeries more efficiently, with less total time under anesthesia - which lowers risk for your pet. ·         How Humane Society Silicon Valley finds “forever homes” for all animals.  Come in and let Julia show you how HSSV treats each animal as a unique individual - offering medical and behavioral care.  Get a look at construction of our new Kitten Nursery.  And learn about HSSV’s successful foster program.   Please help us spread the word to the Silicon Valley community about this vital animal issue.  Visuals of pets are available.  Local area families who have successfully adopted pets from Humane Society Silicon Valley are also available for interviews.  Thank you for your consideration.
