Gmail Hacked; Google Cautions Users

Chinese hackers tried to access email of government officials, military and reporters.

announced over its official blog Wednesday that the company had uncovered a recent campaign to steal Gmail user passwords from China.

The accounts of "hundreds of users" have been affected, and these include "U.S. senior government officials, Chinese political activists and officials in several Asian countries, military and journalists."

According to Google, victims have been notified.

"The goal of this effort seems to have been to monitor the contents of these users’ emails, with the perpetrators apparently using stolen passwords to change people's forwarding and delegation settings," said Eric Grosse, engineering director for Google Security Team, regarding Gmail's email filtering and forwarding settings.
