St. Francis High Hires New Football Coach

Alum Greg Calcagno, who has deep football roots at SFHS, will lead the Lancers starting this upcoming football season.

Saint Francis High School is pleased to announce that Greg Calcagno ’83 has been hired as the new head varsity football coach.

A graduate of Saint Francis High School, Greg brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the position from his time as a player at Saint Francis and at Santa Clara University as well as his work as a coach at Santa Clara and Saint Francis.

"We are extremely excited about the appointment of Greg Calcagno as our new head football coach," said Director of Athletics Michael Pilawski. "Greg’s wealth of experience as a player, coach and administrator are sure to continue the great success of our football program. Greg is also someone who is extremely familiar with our tradition of excellence and will continue to build on that as we look to the future. ”

"I am very excited about the opportunity to lead our football program. It is an honor to work with our talented student athletes and to continue and build upon the tradition of Saint Francis Football," said Calcagno.

"We are fortunate to have a man of Greg’s status assume the leadership of our football program. He is not only passionate about Saint Francis football, but he brings a love for our students, our school and our athletic heritage to this position. I remember his playing days at Saint Francis and Santa Clara as a leader on and off the field, and I have seen him work with our student-athletes these past few years. He will be a great role model for our athletes and our staff. I look forward to some exciting Friday night games!" said Principal Patricia Tennant.

Calcagno has deep roots in the Saint Francis community. He is the son of Ron Calcagno, legendary former head football coach at the school. His wife, Ann (Scharrenberg) '84, brother Kevin '87, and sons Michael '07, David '08, and Robert ’10 are all Saint Francis graduates. He also has a daughter Katherine ’13 and a son Patrick '17.

A member of the school’s Hall of Fame, Calcagno served as captain and quarterback on the Lancer’s first undefeated football team in 1982 earning All-WCAL and All-CCS honors. He also was a member of the basketball team. At Santa Clara University, he served as a three-year captain of the football team, earning honorable mention All-American honors and a B.S. in Finance in 1987. He later earned an MBA from San Jose State University.

Currently the school’s Alumni Director and assistant JV football coach, Calcagno served prior as the Vice President of Engineering and Operations for PaymentOne, a payment services provider based in San Jose. Prior to joining PaymentOne, Calcagno served as the President and CEO of SecureBill and held management positions at AT&T, VRS Billing Systems, and Joseph J. Albanese Inc.

Calcagno replaces Nick Navarro who served as head varsity football coach for the past three years. Navarro is moving to Florida to explore other work opportunities and to move closer to his family.

"Saint Francis High School would like to thank Coach Navarro for all his time, dedication and hard work that he has devoted to our school and our football program. We wish him and his family all the best in their new adventure," said Pilawski.
