Startup Stars: Right Buy Offers "Friendly" Support

A new company in town hopes to simplify and personalize your shopping experience.

Our Startup Star profiles explore the playful side of new venture companies—and their people—in Mountain View. We’ll highlight someone from a Mountain View startup and give you some fun facts about them.

Patch spoke with Gaurav Sharma, the CEO of Right Buy, a startup currently accessible by invitation only, that lets your friends help you making a buying decision about electronics (and other items, later on). Sharma, a Fremont resident, shares his thoughts.

Patch: How did you come up with the idea for your company?

Sharma: Last year I was looking for a camera to buy, and I probably spent a couple of weeks just researching...I just had a really hard time figuring out which one is best for me or which one will work out for me. I spent a couple of weeks and then I asked a couple of friends who I feel are similar to me, and I just went with their recommendation. That's when I said, 'There has to be an easier way than just going through all that.'

Patch: Why Mountain View?

Sharma: I'm not really sure what exactly there is, if there's one thing that attracted me. But one thing that I really love about Mountain View is parking. I go up to San Francisco, and then parking is a nightmare. Mountain View parking is super smooth.

There's a lot of good places to eat, there's a lot of other startups, and and .

Patch: What's the longest time you've spent working on something?

Sharma: 18 hours straight.

Patch: iPhone, Android, Blackberry?

Sharma: iPhone.

Patch: Favorite app?

Sharma: Twitter app's pretty good, Facebook as well.

Patch: What do you do for fun?

Sharma: Trying to brainstorm ideas. Since (Right Buy) is in the early stages, we pretty much have no social life. We're working 16 to18 hours a day. I guess the work is fun when you're caught up, and you see something on screen and you see people giving you feedback. That's a lot of fun for me right now.
