Tech Round-Up: Startups Make WSJ List, Google Shares Hit Record

A look at the ways Mountain View companies have made the news this week.

The Silicon Valley Buisness Journal noticed something interesting about the recent Wall Street Journal "Next Big Thing" annual, that 60 percent of the companies in the list of 50 were from the Bay Area. Of these five are based in Mountain View: NeuroSpace, RockMelt, Soasta, Appcelerator, Couchbase.

Google shares reached a record high on Sept. 24 at $749.38, primarily based on its advertising platform, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported. Earlier in September, Republic Project, an advertising platform that supports rich-media, received Series A funding to the tune of $1 million investment from Google Ventures and 500 Startups.

KleenSpeed, an electric vehicle developer, recently announced their partnership with Sonoma Raceway as an associate Partner in their innovative Accelerating Sustainable Performance Program. Sonoma Raceway hopes to position itself as the leader in motorsports venues in regard to sustainability and the development of new, innovative and environmentally sensitive forms of racing for the near-term future. KleenSpeed, located at NASA Ames, has been involved in EV motorsports since 2007 as part of their R&D program.

Bitcasa, recently announced that Tony Lee joined the company as Vice President of Engineering. Bitcasa provides multi-platform cloud storage. Lee joined Bitcasa from Box, where he was vice president of backend engineering. Prior to Box, he spent eight years at Yahoo, where his last title was senior director of engineering. Bitcasa also announced that Frank Meehan joined its board of directors. Meehan is part of Horizons Ventures, a Hong Kong-based investment firm focused on early-stage companies in the field of telecommunications, media and technology. He currently sits on the boards of Summly, Magisto, TOM Group, Fixmo, Affectiva, DoubleTwist and Desti, and has previously served on the boards of Siri and Spotify. He founded and served as the CEO of INQ Mobile and has held various positions at Hutchison Whampoa and Ericsson across Europe and Asia.
