A Dramatic Film About An Immigrant Reality

On March 21st at 6 p.m. at the Day Worker Center of Mountain View there was a film screening of the movie “A Better Life,” starring the Mexican actor Damian and other hispanic artists.

This drama talks about the struggle of illegal immigrants in the United States and focuses on the life of a Mexican gardener, an honorable and hard-working man who lives with his adolescent son who he tries to protect from the gangs in the public schools and on the street in the poorer neighborhoods of Los Angeles.

His boy is also noble and honest, but is about to be recruited by a gang. It turns out that the gardener that originally was a day worker and waited for employment on a street corner with other workers gets the opportunity to buy a truck and so begins his own landscaping business and therefore can help his family, especially his son, who is a little rebellous and distant.

A few days after buying the vehicle and while he was working high in a tree, his disloyal assistant steals his truck. In his despair, anxious about losing his work vehicle and with the help of his son, he uses violent and dramatic means to recover his truck instead of reporting the theft. (Personally, I don’t support his methods but I do understand his desperation.) The move is very costly, since he is caught fleeing the scene by the police, who takes him to jail for his immediate processing for deportation.

In general, this movie portrays the harsh reality of our Latino community, especially for those that don’t have the necessary documentation to work and live in this country.

In many cases they are deprived of their civil rights and unprotected by the laws, including some politicans and authorities that propose, promote and back anti-immigrant laws and programs. For example, "Secure Communities" where the police, taking advantage of racial profiling, stop people to ask for documentation (a racist and discriminatory act in my opinion) just like what happened to the gardener in the movie when he recovers his vehicle.

In summary, I think that in order to solve these problems there needs to be a comprehensive Migration Reform as soon as possible in order to avoid further abuse against immigrants, especially for those from the Latino community that come to this country only to work honorably, help their families and contribute to the social and economic growth of this great country.

Dramática Película Acerca de Una Realidad

El día 21 de marzo a las 6 p.m. se proyectó en el Day Worker Center de Mountain View la película "A Better Life" protagonizada por el actor méxicano Damián Bichir y otros artistas hispanos.

Este drama habla sobre la problemática de los inmigrantes ilegales en los E.E.U.U. y se centra en la vida de un jardinero mexicano, honrado y trabajador y que vive con su hijo adolescente, a quien trata de proteger de las pandillas en las escuelas públicas y calles de los barrios populares de Los Angeles.

Este muchacho también es noble y honrado pero está a punto de ser reclutado por una pandilla. Sucede que el jardinero que inicialmente era jornalero y esperaba trabajo en una esquina con otros companeros, tiene la oportunidad de comprar una camioneta y así poder tener su propio negocio de "landscaping" y ayudar a su familia, especialmente a su hijo que está un poco rebelde y alejado de el.

A los pocos días de haber comprado el vehículo y mientras que el hacía un trabajo de altura en un árbol, su ayudante en forma desleal le roba la camioneta; éste en su desesperación por recuperar su herramienta de trabajo y con ayuda de su hijo logran encontrar el vehículo y lo recuperan en forma un tanto violenta y dramática sin haber puesto una denuncia policial. (Qué en mi opinión no apoyo la forma como lo hizo pero sí entiendo su desesperación). Esta acción le costaría muy caro, ya que en su huida es intervenido por la policía terminando en la carcel para su inmediato proceso de deportación.

En general esta película narra la dura realidad que vive nuestra comunidad latina. Especialmente los que no tienen documentos para trabajar y vivir en este país, y en muchos casos sin derechos civiles y desprotegidos por las leyes. Incluso algunos políticos y autoridades proponen, promulgan y apoyan leyes y programas anti-inmigrantes como por ejemplo, "Comunidades Seguras" donde la policía, aprovechando el perfil racial de las personas es intervenido para pedirles documentos (acto racista y discriminatorio a mi parecer), tal como le sucedió al jardinero en la película cuando recuperó su vehículo.

En resumen, pienso que para solucionar estos problemas se necesita promulgar una Reforma Migratoria integral a la brevedad posible para evitar abusos contra los inmigrantes, especialmente para los de la comunidad latina que solamente vienen a este país para trabajar honradamente, ayudar a sus familias y aportar en el crecimiento social y economico de este gran país.
