County Money Woes Could Spell Labor Doom

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors has to figure out how make up a $67 million shortfall.

The County of Santa Clara's Fiscal Year 2014 budget needs some serious tweaking and the County Board of Supervisors is set to address the problem with a series of hearings next week.

Here's the need-to-know information:

  • The recommended budget for the year is $4.6 billion including services, operations, capital improvements and reserves.
  • The recommended general fund budget is $2.4 billion.
  • There is a $67 million shortfall that the county must address.
  •  The County Executive has proposed making up that money with "$28.7 million in departmental solutions," taking $20 million from the Measure A sales tax increase and $21.7 million in labor concessions.
  • The county is also expecting $24 million in property tax growth.
  • Medi-Cal expansion is putting at least $33 million at risk.
The hearings are set for June 17-19 and June 21. For more detailed information on the budget situation click here to visit the county website then look for the "Hot Items" tab.
