Monday, Aug. 22

Since the start of the recession in 2008, Mariano Castro Elementary school has stopped giving parents a supply list. Instead, it accepts donations from parents, and the school orders the supplies in bulk. This, according to Principal Judy Crates, helps parents save money, time and gas, and ensures that students actually get the things they need.

Three arrests have been made seven years after the drive-by-shooting of 17-year-old Alex Fernandez in Mountain View, the FBI and the Santa Clara County Violent Gang Task Force announced today.

Tuesday, Aug. 23

The Mountain View City Council, city manager and members of the community development team joined developer Merlone Geier Partner Wednesday at the official groundbreaking of The Village at San Antonio Center.

Steve Jobs' resigned as CEO of Apple, and Tim Cook, the company’s chief operating officer, will replace him at the helm. Jobs is credited with turning around the company that nearly faced bankruptcy about 13 years ago.

Thursday, Aug. 25

Though Steve Jobs spent his early years in Mountain View, a modest home on a quiet Los Altos street that became the birthplace of Apple has long been a tourist attraction for those in the know.

As Hurricane Irene hammered the eastern seaboard of the United States, local airports canceled flights to that part of the country. In California for the Rock The Bells concert tour, New York hip hop artist Immortal Technique reflected on how he thinks the city will react.
