Week in Review, March 27-April 2: Google Leases Local Land Plot, Unemployment Drops, Gas Prices Spike

Sunday, March 27

Despite the rainy weather, the annual  with participants from high schools in several local cities such as Palo Alto, Los Altos and Milpitas. Saint Francis High School in Mountain View nabbed several of the top prizes for relays, discus and shot put.

Monday, March 28

Google announced for 53 years on Charleston Road. The company will pre-pay $30 million worth of rent, and one of several conditions included that no burrowing owls would be on the property. The company will erect a green building on the land.

Mountain View’s unemployment rate compared with 7.8 percent in in January, according to a report released March 24 by the state’s Economic Development Corporation. In Santa Clara County overall, the numbers dropped to 10.3 percent in February, compared to 10.5 percent in January.

Tuesday, March 29

Two Mountain View men for allegedly possessing methamphetamine and various prescription pills for which they had no prescriptions. Police pulled over Lucas Chapman, 29, and Geoffrey Wolf, 29, on Escuela Avenue for an exhaust problem, when the officer noticed a glass pipe for smoking methamphetamine on the floor of the car. \

The Search For Extraterrestrial Life Institute (SETI) announced its , Guggenheim Fellow Charles Lindsey.

Wednesday, March 30

Is homework just busywork? Mom Autumn Vandiver isn’t necessary for her son or his classmates.

Short on cash? Katie Ginder-Vogel  great savings at Mountain View stores and restaurants.

Scratch Restaurant was officially welcomed into the Mountain View community and to Castro Street. At the grand opening on Wednesday, Mayor Jac Siegel, members of the Chamber of Commerce and foodies stopped by to celebrate the event.

Thursday, March 31

The Los Altos High baseball team  Mountain View High 20 to 5, scoring nine home runs in the first inning of the game.

Mountain View locals sounded off about , which has spiked past $4. Some have decided to take more public transportation or walk. Do you mind the price hike?

Alas, spring is here! Mountain View weather reaches a record high of 83 degrees,  March 31 high in 2000 of 82 degrees.

Friday, April 1

The Mountain View City Council adopted the city’s first green building code, which set standards for energy and water consumption for new building constructions and additions. Most of the California’s green building code, CalGreen.

Mountain View’s tech companies have  all week. Microsoft filed an antitrust complaint against its fellow neighborhood giant Google. Other companies, such as Clearwell Systems and Microsoft announced new web-based learning games.

Saturday, April 2

Congratulations to Erica Fischer-Cobrie, this week’s The star volleyball player at Mountain View High School excels at many languages and is a member of the school’s debate team.
