Being a 49er Fan in Seattle

Despite the boos and bashes we saw on t.v. by the "12th" football player, some people in Seattle actually did bleed gold.

My boyfriend, Christopher, and I happened to be in Seattle the weekend of the big game. We booked our tickets months before so of course there was no way we could predict that our team would be looked down upon that weekend.

Landing in Washington, we could already feel the rival tension. "12" flags hung everywhere-- from storefronts to cars-- and Seahawks gear was worn by everyone-- from babies to elderly.

However, a few brave souls walked proudly with a "Forever Faithful" tee or an SF beanie. A bar downtown even hosted a rally for the Niner fans and gave away "Quest for Six" towels. If I didn't know any better, I would have belived that bar teleported us back home. Everyone in it was wearing red.

It turned out that the 49er fans were a mix of Washington locals and California locals who drove up just for the game. Also, several people who are now locals were originally from California.

Considering that my boyfriend and I are petite sized and only travelled with each other, we feared for our safety so we didn't rep our team to any extremities. We simply fist bumped and high-fived Niners as they passed by while avoiding the Seahawks' side remarks and car honks.
