A Tale of Two Turkeys — Who Will Be the National Bird?

Which "big bird" will win the title?

By Dixie Jordan

On the left, Caramel. On the right, Popcorn. Two turkeys born the same day (July 8, 2013), both male, about the same height (1'11" to 2 feet tall) and weight (37 to 38 lb.). But only one will be the National Thanksgiving Turkey.

The nation's gobbler, chosen by a vote of the American electorate, will be announced today by President Barack Obama. To eliminate any guilt-inducing qualms among voters, though, both birds will be "pardoned" (i.e., they will live on through Thanksgiving and beyond).

Online voting closed Tuesday, but you can still visit Caramel and Popcorn's page on the White House website and hear their comparative gobbles. (Caramel sounds like a bigger chicken, while Popcorn's gobble has a dog-like quality.)
