Residing in the Land of Bjork

CSMA staffer, Kyle Williams, leaves for an Icelandic artist residency. The Iceland arts and music scene is vibrant and is converging.

The quality of teachers at Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) never ceases to amaze me. Sometimes young professionals, often fresh out of college, start their career with us. They learn many valuable skills, contribute greatly to the school and move onto exciting projects. Kyle Williams is such a person. Having come to us from Stanford , he evolved into the quintessential renaissance man; coordinating art programs, teaching classes and installing exhibits in our Mohr Gallery. Kyle is leaving CSMA to develop the next stage of his career in an artist’s residency in Iceland. As I have always been fascinated with this island nation, I’m curious about what inspired to Kyle to study in the most sparsely populated country in Europe.

According to the official government site, Iceland-Is, “…the country is a progressive, modern society that continuously ranks at the top of the United Nations Human Development Index and is annually considered to be one of greenest countries on the planet.“ That would surely be reason enough to visit/study there, but Iceland has also developed a vibrant music and art scene. Renowned for its poetry, prose and sagas, with several theaters, a symphony and opera, Iceland has also emerged with a formidable contemporary music and arts scene. The aptly named site, Fabulous Iceland website, cites Bjork and Siqur Ros as two examples of internationally renowned Icelandic artists.

With his interests in both art and music, Kyle was a perfect fit for CSMA, and  Iceland will provide deliver when it comes to a multi-faceted arts community. According to an article in Icelandic Art News, “Recent years have seen interesting crossovers in art and music, and with the younger generation the two scenes have merged in interesting ways.” So Kyle, we wish you well as you embark on your artistic odyssey to the top of the world.
