UPDATED: Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake Strikes in Mexico

The strong tremor in the State of Oaxaca was 12 miles deep.

This morning the Mountain View Mexican community felt shaken up, just as their friends and family did in the State of Oaxaca.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 12:02 p.m. local time and was 12.4 miles deep. The tremor could be felt as far as Mexico City 200 miles away.

The aftershock measured 5.1 magnitude within the following hours of the bigger quake.

Rosemary Colon, a bartender at and , returned from the city of Oaxaca last month where she visited friends. When she learned about the earthquale, she quickly posted on Facebook to find out information from friends.

"There's a whole lof of shaking but okay," responded her friend Tracy Roach.

Colon's co-worker brewer Saul Rámirez, who's family lives about an our south of the city of Oaxaca in the town of San Nicolas in the municpality of Zimatlan de Álvarez, had not heard the news. However, he wasn't too worried about his family.

"In the town they have small houses, of one or two stories and my family's house is newer," he said, referring that it should be up to code. "The building is made of concrete and should hold that is, if it's been constructed well."
