Obituary: Joseph A. Mijares (1910-2013)

After 102 years, a beloved father and 80-year-resident of Mountain View dies peacefully.

Joseph A. Mijares, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013. He was 102.

Born in San Diego on Sept. 21, 1911, Joe resided in Mountain View for 80 years where he raised his family. He enjoyed being with family and friends, helping others, taking long walks and trips to Reno. He believed that if you gave your worries to God, He would take care of them.

In an acknowledgement of his centennial celebration, the Mountain View Voice wrote that in addition to Joe's work as a farm worker he was a bootlegger and "ran moonshine up and down the state during Prohibition."

Joe was preceded in death by his first wife Lena who died in 1962 and his second wife Willie Jean who died in 1992. He is survived by his loving children, Maria, Josie, Joanne, Linda, Joey and Betty; grandchildren Randy, Crystal, Jason, Brittany, Danielle, Jeremy, Kennyth, Sally, Lilly-Ahna, Lenabelle and Asiah; great-grandchild Devyn; and sister Sally. He also has several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 26 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary at 466 N. Winchester Blvd. in Santa Clara. A rosary service will start at the same location at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at  Saint Athanasius Church on 160 N. Rengstorff Ave.
