2012 Mountain View Crime Stats: Some Good, Some Bad

Reported aggravated assaults rose by 40 percent last year while reports of robberies and rapes dropped.

Viewed over a five year period, crime continues to decrease in Mountain View, despite an increase in 2012 reported statistics, a police report informs.

Last year, the Mountain View Police Department reported robberies and rapes dropped 17 percent respectively compared to 2011. However, aggravated assaults rose by 40 percent—from 105 to 147—in 2012 and motor vehicle thefts increased by 14 percent, from 100 to 114.

The figures also show that 7 percent more burglaries occurred. Out of 178 reported burglaries last year, 111 were residential, compared to 88 in 2011—an increase of 26 percent. Larcenies also increased four percent.

In total, felonious crimes jumped 7 percent from 2011 to 2012.

The comparative annual police report shows that in the past five years—from 2008 to 2012—total crime actually fell by 9.4 percent. Aside from aggravated assaults, which rose by 3.5 percent, felonious crimes decreased in every other category.

Burglaries, which rose year-to-year from 2011 to 2012, have actually fallen 11.9 percent since 2008.

There have also been 19.2 percent fewer misdemeanors since 2008, though misdemeanor offenses did rise in certain areas.

The most significant increase was in reports of driving under the influence, which rose 30.2 percent in five years. Possession of stolen property, sex offenses, violation of liquor laws and public intoxication also rose.

Assaults against police officers grew 36 percent since 2008. That figure jumped 73 percent from 2011 to 2012.
