Bike Thief Caught After Brief Chase in Mountain View

Mountain View Police locate suspect on stolen bike several miles away on Stevens Creek Trail.

An alleged bike thief was caught after an alert witness reported a burglary at the Mountain View Caltrain station Tuesday evening, police said.

Alden Garcia Sr. was arrested after someone told police they saw him approach a group of locked bicycles at the station, located at 600 W. Evelyn Ave., around 5:15 p.m., police said.

He was seen with a pair of bolt cutters beneath his shirt and the witness said he heard what sounded like a lock being cut, according to police.

The witness kept tabs on the suspect's clothing and which direction he headed and then called police.

Police responded to the area and headed east on West Evelyn Avenue.

Garcia was allegedly found wearing a white helmet and riding a purportedly stolen bicycle while heading south on the Stevens Creek Trail, police said.

An officer attempted to stop him but a brief chase ensued and more units were called to El Camino Real and state Highway 85 where Garcia was caught.

Identified as a parolee out of San Jose, Garcia was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, possession of stolen property and petty theft with priors, and booked on charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

He was transported to the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
