UPDATED: Caltrain Strikes, Kills Man on Tracks at San Antonio Station

Identity of victim not yet released by Santa Clara County coroner.

A southbound Caltrain struck and killed a man Wednesday night on the tracks south of the San Antonio station in Mountain View, according to a Caltrain spokeswoman.

The man was hit at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said. The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not determined whether this was an intentional act, she said. The train stopped 100 yards north of Rengstorff Avenue in Mountain View.

The Santa Clara County Coroner has not yet released the identity of the victim.

No passengers or crew members were injured. Trains began single-tracking around the scene of the incident at 8 p.m. Both tracks reopened at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The 400 passengers aboard train No. 382, which operates on Caltrain's Baby Bullet express service and makes select stops, were transferred to another train that continued south to the San Jose Diridon station.

Dunn said a bus was provided for passengers on the Baby Bullet train No. 386, which was scheduled to reach the Sunnyvale station at 7:21 p.m.

Both tracks in the area of the incident were closed as of 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Mountain View Fire Department reported that it had responded to a call about the train striking a pedestrian at 6:57 p.m. However, the Caltrain right-of-way is under the jurisdiction of the San Mateo Sheriff's Office, according to the Mountain View Police Department.

This is the seventh fatality on the Caltrain tracks this year, of which three were determined to be suicides and three remain under investigation. Last year there were 11 fatalities.

This is Mountain View's first train fatality for 2011.
