Fire Battalion Chief Receives Regional Award

Mountain View Fire's Ted Vandenberg honored as 2013 recipient of John Fetz Memorial Training Instructor of the Year Award

Before firefighters run into buildings to rescue people and pets, they train really hard.

One of those trainers is Mountain View Fire Battalion Chief Ted Vandenberg, who along with San Jose Fire Department's James Mendoza have been named by the Santa Clara County Training Officers Association co-recipients of this year’s John Fetz Memorial Training Instructor of the Year Award, the MVFD announced on Facebook.

The award honors John Fetz, a training Battalion Chief for Mountain View Fire Department who retired from the department in December 1999. Soon after his retirement Chief Fetz lost his battle to cancer, according to the MVFD.

"Chief Fetz left an indelible mark on this department with his subtle humor, calm demeanor, compassion for co-workers and his dedication to the fire service and training," the Facebook post said. "Congratulations to both Ted and James on receiving this award!"
