FOLLOW-UP: Pedestrian from Fatal Traffic Accident Identified

The driver of the vehicle did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police say.

William Ware, 50, as he stood near the VTA bus stop on eastbound California Street and Escuela Avenue, the police reported Friday.

Mountain View Patch observed at the scene that Ware's body suffered dismemberment as there were two areas of the incident scene with yellow tarps.

Residents of the Castro City neighborhood who lingered around the accident scene guessed that Ware may have been the victim because he routinely hopped on the bus at that corner and still laying beneath the bent street sign next to a bench was his signature white fishing hat.

They said Ware frequently took the bus to visit the food pantry at the .

The Mountain View Police Department did not released the name of the 21-year-old driver. Spokeswoman Liz Wylie said that he didn't appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and he remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

"Traffic accident investigations involving fatalities are complex and lengthy investigations," she said. "The cause of the collision and any contributing or associated factors will not be know until the conclusion of the investigation."

The police department and the District Attorney's office will work together to determine if any charges against the driver are appropriate.
