A 23-year-old man died after his motorcycle struck the back of a big-rig on U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Clara early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at 2:39 a.m. on northbound Highway 101 just north of Great America Parkway.
CHP Officer Ross Lee said the motorcyclist, a San Jose resident whose name is not yet being released, was speeding as fast as 100 mph and tried to pass the big-rig, but instead hit it and was ejected from the motorcycle onto the roadway.
Other vehicles then hit the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee said.
The drivers of all vehicles involved in the crash pulled over and cooperated with investigators, according to the CHP.
The collision prompted authorities to close the two right lanes of northbound Highway 101 for more than two hours, CHP officials said.
