Mountain View Doctor Accused of Running 'Pill Mill'

Dr. Jasna Mrdjen is accused of prescribing prescription drugs to undercover officers without performing exams or reviewing medical records, according to the DA's Office.

A Mountain View doctor with an office in Los Gatos has been arraigned Monday, May 14, on charges she prescribed large quantities of powerful prescription drugs to undercover officers without an examination or review of medical records.

Dr. Jasna Mrdjen, 69 also allegdly prescribed to addicts, according to the charges, despite several cases in which family members pleaded with her to stop, said the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office in a written press release.

A lengthy, multi-agency investigation, resulted in the arrest of numerous patients of Mrdjen for their illegal resell of the prescriptions, the DA said in the release.

"Prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States,’" James Sibley, supervising prosecutor of the DA’s Narcotics unit, said. "Overdoses have more than tripled since 2009 and now, with more than 40 people dying every day, outrank deaths due to traffic accidents."

On Friday, May 11, Santa Clara County Special Enforcement Team (SCCSET) served search warrants on the Pain Management Clinic at 14125 Capri Dr., Suite #1A, in Los Gatos, operated by Mrdjen.

Mrdjen, a 1977 graduate of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Medicine in Croatia and admitted to practice in California that same year, was arrested on a $1,000,000 arrest warrant.  

The doctor was arraigned at 1:30 p.m. in Department 23 of the Santa Clara County Superior Court, on a 12 count felony complaint alleging that she conspired to sell controlled substances, by excessively prescribing narcotics (Oxycodone) to patients involved in illegal diversion and resale, according to the release.

Mrdjen also faces nine felony counts for issuing prescriptions outside the usual course of professional treatment and two felony counts for prescribing controlled substances to an addict. If convicted, she could face more than 12 years in prison, the release stated.

SCCSET is a multi-jurisdictional task force that targets mid-to-major level narcotic dealers, traffickers and manufacturers throughout Santa Clara County.

SCCSET was assisted in this case by investigators from the Medical Board of California and California Department of Justice, agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency, and police officers from Los Gatos/Monte Sereno and Mountain View.
