Sleepy Big-Rig Driver Crashes on I-880 in South Bay; Diesel Fuel Spills

All southbound lanes on I-880 in the San Jose area are reopened as of 5 a.m. today following an accident and diesel fuel spill from a big rig that went off the roadway and crashed, according to theCalifornia Highway Patrol.
The driver said that he might have fallen asleep at the wheel, the CHP said, adding he was determined not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Police said he went off the side of the road and drove into a ditch near the Stevens Creek Boulevard off-ramp at about 2:40 a.m.
Crews spent the early morning cleaning diesel fuel that spilled onto dirt near the roadway, police said.
The far right lane was blocked briefly by emergency crews, but all lanes reopened at about 5 a.m., the CHP said.
