Stop! New Signs Slowdown Traffic in Mountain View

Motorist must now come to a complete stop at the intersection of Hans and Phyllis Avenues.

Several months after a woman died crossing near Phyllis and Hans Avenues, stop signs have been added to that intersection.

The Mountain View Police Department recently informed the community on their blog o August 1 that the City of Mountain View - City Hall Public Works and Engineers added and "just in time for school!" Benjamin Bubb Elementary School is located at 525 Hans Ave.

While drivers should always make stop at signs, apparently some haven't noticed the new signs.

"Someone blew right past yesterday. Almost hit me. Still have dangerous and oblivious motorists. Be careful out there," wrote Sandy Arita Ward on the MVPD's Facebook page.

The department responded.

"Unfortunately, there will always be drivers, peds and bicyclists who don't pay any attention. We all have to ensure that we stay alert!" the MVPD replied.

Shannon Madison added that although she appreciated the efforts of the department, there should be "some 'educational enforcement' might be in order here."

"I'm *super* happy about this stop sign, but in spite of the orange flags and such, it seems like people are totally clueless about how to manage traffic at this intersection," Madison said. "This morning, the cars turning left onto Phyllis from Hans weren't coming to a complete stop, and weren't taking turns with traffic from other directions. I saw three people pause then blow through from Hans, one after the other."

Regardless, the fact the stop signs have gone up before the start of school will impact all.

"It's about fricking time," Pamela Hilton said."Only took 30 years to get what my dad initiated. He was the instrumental person to have the crosswalk put there when I was a kid living on Phyllis. That street has been way too crazy for many years!! And, with all the kids that cross that street going to and from school, it's a shame it took this long.

What do you think about the new stop signs?
