129th Rescue Wing Honored for Off-Shore Feat

A month after a dramatic rescue 700 miles off the coast of Mexico, seven local airmen recognized for successful effort by State.

The State of California today honored seven soldiers with the of the California Air National Guardsmen from a fishing vessel in international waters 500 miles off the coast of Acapulco, Mexico, on Mar. 12, 2012.

Senator Lou Correa, chairman of the California Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, introduced each Airman by name and spoke about their personal involvement in the rescue operation.

Located at Moffett Federal Air Field, the 129th on the evening of Mar. 9 about the two injured fishermen. Badly burned in a diesel fire, the men required medical treatment beyond the capabilities of the vessel's medical staff.

Due to the vessel's remote location in the Pacific Ocean and the immediate need for medical care, the 129th accepted and successfully completed the mission.

This rescue brings the total number of people saved by the 129th to 950.
