Funeral Services Saturday for Marine Killed in Afghanistan

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the 'Captain Matthew Patrick Manoukian Tribute Scholarship Fund.'

A memorial service will be held for U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Matt Manoukian this Saturday, Aug. 18.

The service for takes place at 3 p.m. in the gymnasium of in Mountain View.

According to the U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command, Manoukian died around 2 a.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 10th in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

No details have been released yet about the arrival of his body to the Bay Area.

In Afghanistan, Manoukian served in the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and , a Marines spokesman said.

Among his commendations for past exemplary service, Manoukian had received two Purple Hearts, according to the Marine Corps.

Manoukian had previously served as a platoon commander for the 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment in Camp Pendleton and had also served in Iraq, according to the Marine Corps.

According to the memorial page created for Manoukian by his friends and family:

"during that tour, he was injured by a roadside IED and suffered a concussion. Despite his injury, he was able to put a tourniquet on the bleeding leg of a comrade, saving his life. He was Medevaced to al-Asad Air Force Base and insisted that he be returned to his men as soon as he was cleared for duty."

He was also both an airborne parachutist and a 1st degree Black Belt.

In lieu of flowers, the Manoukian family requests contributions be made to the Captain Matthew Patrick Manoukian Tribute scholarship fund in honor of Matt (St. Francis High School – Class of ’01)
