Intersection Gets Left Turn Lanes, New Light Signals

After a push by the community for more traffic safety, the busy intersection of California Street and Escuela Avenue gets new lanes, lights and crosswalks.

Three years after the community of parents in Castro City organized to get dedicated left turn lanes on the intersection of California Street and Escuela Avenue, their dream has become a reality.

"I totally forgot about this great safety accomplishment," said , co-president of the Community in Action Team, who helped lead the effort."This was a safety endeavor that CAT requested almost over three years ago."

The has been busy for almost two weeks on each corner because according to Director Mike Fuller new street lights will be added to to warn pedestrians that vehicles could be making a left.

"We are replacing the traffic signal with a new signal that will allow dedicated left turn movements from California onto Escuela and from Escuela onto California," he said. "This will allow pedestrians to cross without a conflict with cars turning left."

The changes would alleviate the safety concerns of parents and neighbors in the neighborhood because of the amount of children that cross over to attend and viceversa, the senior citizens who visit the .
