High school students from Mountain View and Los Altos participate in citywide job shadowing day.

The City of Mountain View hosted more than 40 high school students from Mountain View, Los Altos and Alta Vista High Schools during a job shadowing day on Thursday, Feb. 2.

Students had the opportunity to visit one of 14 jobs sites and six stopped by the Fire Department's Station No. 1 because of their interest in the particular field or career.

The students worked alongside the firefighters in a variety of tasks including station maintenance, ensuring the engine was ready and stocked and watching roof ventilation training.

According to Jaime Garrett, the student's experienced when they got to see those same firefighters in action a few minutes later.

"Just as we were getting ready to do some video simulation training, a call came in around the corner for a report of a building fire," she said. "After we closed up the station the students and I detoured to the call on our way back to City Hall (where we were to end our day) so that the students could see the response.

"Overall it was a great day and we hope that they walked away with a sense of what a day in the life of a firefighter could be!"
