Social Media Experts Descend on NASA Ames

The space exploration agency hopes to not only reach stars and planets, but social media users on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube too.

Several weeks ago, NASA Ames sent media on its press list an interesting announcement.

The Moffett Field-based research center invited social media experts to cover how astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) could control the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) rover on the moon.

Only one of 15 social media experts invited to participate, web developer JeanCarl Bisson shared his experience via Twitter, Storify—which aggregates social media into a a seamless post—and YouTube.

"We (regular people with an interest in space)," he told Patch, "were selected for being active on social media channels and wanting to spread the word about what NASA is doing."

Bisson wrote about his experience on his blog "30 Days of Travel" and there he takes readers behind the scenes inside the Multi-Mission Ops Center—room 203 of the Space Projects Facility on the Ames campus. From that control room NASA communicated with other research centers across the country like Marshall Space Flight Center and Johnson Space Center to connect the ISS to the LADEE rover.

Then Bisson and the other observed how the ISS' astronauts successfully controlled rovers on NASA Ames's
