Where Should City Put the Immigrant House?

Mountain View's city council considers what to do with the Immigrant House at Tuesday's council session.

It's a little house with a whole lot of history.

The Immigrant House, originally located at 166 Bryant St., was moved to make room for a new office building. It's been housed temporarily at Mountain View's Municipal Operation Center (MOC) on Whisman Road.

At the City Council session Tuesday, council will consider where to place the mid-19th century 400 square foot structure and how to fundraise—from non-City sources—for its relocation and renovation. This could cost approximately $225,000.

According to city staff, the city has evaluated possible locations for Immigrant House where visitors could peer through windows and see the home furnished with furniture from the time period when immigrants passing through Mountain View would stay there. Volunteers docents would help visitors.

The potential locations to be at council include:

  • Southwest corner of Latham Street and Shoreline Boulevard
  • Northeast corner of Church Street and Shoreline Boulevard
  • Whisman Road near the MOC
  • Deer Hollow Farm
  • 771 North Rengstorff Avenue
  • Rengstorff House, or
  • Non-city property
The city would be willing to store the Immigrant House at the MOC until February 2016.

Discussion of this item will take place this Tuesday, May 21 after 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
