Asian Box Opens on Mountain View's Castro Street

The healthy and fresh fast-food eatery offers hearty gluten-free options for under $10.

If there's one truism about Castro Street is that when one restaurant closes another one opens.

This is the case with Asian Box, which opened on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 142 Castro St., and now occupies the space of the former Kitchen Table.

Asian Box, a fast and casual eatery, akin to the Mexican food-chain Chipotle, but with Asian street food options. So a really hungry patron arrives and orders options from the four different ingredient menus.

  • Step One: Choose from brown rice, jasmine rice, Asian salad or chilled rice noodles.
  • Step Two: Choose from six-spices blend chicken, lemongrass pork, glazed beef, tofu or shrimp.
  • Step Three: Choose the toppings.
  • Step Four: Choose from the sauces including tamarind vinaigrette, sriracha or a no-oil fish sauce.

The gluten-free recipes were created by Corporate Executive Chef Grace Nguyen—formerly of Charles Phan’s acclaimed Slanted Door and Out The Door. There are also some ready-made combinations inspired by the chefs.

New with the opening of the Mountain View location is a featured Asian Rib Night on Mondays, a Kid’s Menu and a limited selection of gluten-free wines and beers. Asian Box also stands out for its boxes made with high-quality, all-natural ingredients in earth-friendly packaging.

Its first restaurant, located at the Town and Country Village in Palo Alto, open in early 2012.
