SCCCPOA: Kids to shop for holiday gifts with correctional deputies at Target in San Jose, Dec. 12

Four correctional deputies will have much more fun than they usually have at their jail jobs on Thursday, Dec. 12, during the annual “Shop With a Cop” event in San Jose.

It starts at 9 a.m. at the Target store at 533 Coleman Ave. and ends around noon.

They will assist with a $125 shopping spree for holiday presents for each of 32 students from Santee Elementary School. Children who have lost a parent to domestic violence will also participate.

Other police jurisdictions are involved, including the San Jose area command of California Highway Patrol as well as police departments in San Jose and Campbell. The officers are Julio Alvarez, Carlton Gray, Robert Osborne and Jesus Reyes, all members of the Santa Clara County Correctional Peace Officers’ Association. Alvarez is the group’s vice president.

SCCCPOA made a donation to cover the cost of the gifts. “The students can pick out their own gifts and buy some for their friends and families,” said SCCCPOA president Lance Scimeca.

“It will be a joyful time for all, much different from our serious business of law enforcement.”

The SCCCPOA most recently sent members to socialize adoptable dogs and kittens at the San Martin Animal Shelter in the south county. One boxer ignored the new dog toys that Scimeca had brought along, and just wanted to sit with him and be petted.
