Re-Zoning Could Affect Bubb, Castro, Monta Loma Schools

The district sent a letter to parents about possible boundary changes for the three elementary schools.

Some Mountain View residents received a letter dated Nov. 10 from the  about a possible change in attendance boundaries for the 2012-13 school year.

If enacted, the change would affect , , and elementary schools.

The change would reassign two areas currently in Bubb's zone to Castro, and one area in Castro's zone to Monta Loma. The potential rezoning aims to sustain "reasonable" school enrollment levels, increase access and walkability to each school, and reduce district busing.

Students currently in Bubb and Castro would not be required to transfer out. In addition, siblings of these students would be allowed to attend the same school during the 2012-2013 school year. In subsequent years,"siblings would be given the same special priority given with respect to other intradistrict transfer requests," the letter read.

The exact three areas being considered for rezoning are below:

  • Area #1: The area bounded by Latham Street, Escuela Avenue, El Camino Real, and South Rengstorff Avenue–currently assigned to Bubb School.
  • Area #2: The area bounded by Central Expressway, Chiquita Avenue (extended to Central), California Street, and Escuela Avenue (extended to Central)–currently assigned to Bubb School.
  • Area #3: The area bounded by Central Expressway, South Rengstorff Avenue, California Street, and Ortega Avenue (extended to Central)–currently assigned to Castro School.

The district will discuss the potential changes at the next board meeting on Thursday, Nov. 17, at approximately 8:15 pm. Official action on the issue is scheduled for the meeting on Thursday, Dec. 8.
