Brandi Chastain Helps Honor Two for Work with Youth

The Mountain View-Los Altos Challenge Team recognized on Tuesday two individuals for their work with at-risk youth.

With the help of Two-time World Cup and three-time Olympic gold medalist , the Challenge Team honored at their annual "Champions for Youth Awards" breakfast, the Youth Resources Manager for the City of Mountain View Kimberly Castro and soccer player Sonia Nigam, one of the co-directors of the summer camp.

As part of her duties for the city, Castro works to create fun, educational and team-building programming for youth and helps advise the . During her free time, she sits on the board of the Mountain View Police Activities League (MVPAL) and the Gateway Neighborhood Center of Sunnyvale.

Sonia Nigam also works with MVPAL, but in a different capactiy. Nigam, along with her friend and soccer teammate Allie Gamble, co-directs a five-week long summer soccer camp that now has nearly 350 participants from Mountain View and Sunnyvale. This in addition to her schoolwork at MVHS where she maintains a 4.5 GPA.

It's only fitting then that Chastain gave the keynote. Chastain founded the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative to mobilizes women athletes to serve as role models of health, hope, and wholeness to girls and women in underserved communities and to children with disabilities. in Mountain View—at and a joint program between and Schools.

The Champions for Youth breakfast was held at Michaels Restaurant at Shoreline Park.
