Khan Academy, Mint.com, Google Win Webby Awards

Mountain View companies continue to demonstrate their strength online.

Salman Khan's online math and science videos continue to disrupt education and gain more followers.

This time around the Khan Academy's biggest fans are the Webby Award judges who gave the Mountain View-based non-profit educational site the top prize in its education category. They beat out the well-known and popular Ted Talks.

Other local winners include Intuit's Mint.com, which helps individuals manage their finances, and Google's new Art Project. Under the government website category, NASA took the top spot.

Newcomer received a People's Choice mention for social media. Pinterest won that category.

I am not sure I would say that Kahn Academy "continues to disrupt education" especially considering that the Los Altos School District is using Kahn in all it's classrooms, and the Mountain View Whisman School District is piloting Kahn in some of it's classrooms this year. I think a more appropriate phrase would be "continues to enhance education" or "continues to change how we think about education".

I think giving an award to a site where the guy teaches taht two plus itself is two and that 83 x 4 is a sum is cheesy. Yes, I'd say the videos disrupt educational progress -we're back to "you don't need to understand math; just plug the numbers into this procedure."
