MVHS Student of the Month: Kiana Nouri

An app developer, humanitarian, athlete, publisher and entrepreneur—all and not even a senior—makes Kiana Nouri the Mountain View High April student of the month.

Congratulations to Mountain View High's April 2013 Student of the Month, Kiana Nouri. The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District designates this honor to a student from one or more of its high schools each month and provides the text of its nomination to Patch.

One of MVLA’s six year plans is to, "enhance the opportunities as well as achievement of students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math." The April student of the month is not only benefiting from this plan but furthering Mountain Views efforts in science and technology.

Kiana Nouri is a junior at Mountain View High School. From an early age, Kiana knew she had a passion for math and science but it’s been during the last couple years that Kiana has been able to really extend her love to others.

Last spring, Kiana participated in the Technovation challenge, which encourages women to become technologically innovative. With the supervision of science teacher, Dr. Krishna, the teamof girls from Mountain View created an app for the competition titled Intoxication Station. They planned, built a prototype, and pitched to venture capitalists their app which sought to educate people about alcohol safety. The team was extremely successful, winning first in regionals and third in nationals. While the competition has ended, Kiana still plans to use the developed app to start her own company that will use the profits from app downloads for humanitarian efforts.

After reading several science magazines about prosthetic legs, Kiana will likely chose to donate her profits to creating $20 prosthetic legs. Kiana is most proud of how she’s been able to enrich the scientific involvement at Mountain View through her magazine, 'Science Guru.' Kiana is the president and founder of the Science Guru club which produces newsletters concerning the latest scientific discoveries, conferences, and online news. She created the club to increase interest in science on campus; her first issue distributed 1,400 copies. The second issue will be published in April.

Kiana accredits a lot of her initiative in science and technology to the program Women 2.0. The organization promotes women entrepreneurship to create products and start their own companies. The junior couples the guidance from Women 2.0 and her own experiences to represent a female scientist and leader for her peers. She has created the Kiana Nouri’s Leadership Blog online in which she shares her experiences, discoveries, and skills gained throughout hermany activities. Some points she’s made are about being open minded and finding the perfect balance of control in a group.

In addition to her scientific and leadership experiences, Kiana is very well rounded in other extracurriculars. She has been a member of the MV track team for three years and a private club track team. She hopes to continue sprinting in the future and hopefully be recruited to run track in college. Kiana is also fluent in Farsi and is learning Spanish and Korean. Her proficiency in language will surely help her to connect with more people and spread her passion of science.

Without further ado, it is my honor to present the April student of the month, Kiana Nouri.
