The St. Francis High-Mountain View boys basketball teams season ended at the hands of Woodcreek High Tuesday night in a CIF State Division II Boys Basketball Championship first round game at St. Francis High.

Woodcreek knocked down a pair of clutch free throws late to edge the host team 55-54, advancing to Thursday’s second round.

St. Francis rattled off a 20-7 run in the second quarter, but the halftime break cooled the momentum, something the home team was searching to regain the final 16 minutes of play.

“The bottom line was they made plays and we didn’t down the stretch,” St. Francis head coach Mike Motil said. “We didn’t do a good enough job of contesting shots. There was stretches were we did it, especially in the second quarter. The halftime break hurt us tonight. We came out in the second half and lost our energy.”

Junior center Drew Dickey led the Lancers with 11 points. It was the most action the 6-foot-8 big man had seen since returning for his near two-month absence due to a hand injury.

“He did pretty well,” Motil said. “We only let him get after it for two-three minutes at a time. His timing is a little off still, but for not playing for a month and a half I was pleased with his effort.”

St. Francis finishes the season 15-14 overall. Seniors Vince Miles, Ivan Margaretic, Sean Dawkins, Chris Chang, Kenny Harris Jr. and Lamond McCoy all played in their final games as a Lancer last night.

“It’s a group of really nice kids,” Motil said about his seniors. “They really love the game.”
