Blue Star Moms Offer Holiday Cheer to Homeless Vets

Veterans got a chance to forget their troubles with a meal, carols, and backpacks full of helpful items, including hand-knitted scarfs and caps.

"No vet should be homeless," former Army Ranger Ron Smith said on Saturday at a holiday party especially for him and 34 other homeless veterans hosted by the South Bay Blue Star Moms at the EHC Life Builder Boccardo Center homeless shelter in San Jose.

Together with volunteers from Texas Instruments, Blue Star Moms from all over the valley served a meal of Mexican food, ate and conversed with the vets, and sang Christmas songs. The Moms distributed backpacks filled with necessities like socks, flashlights, snacks and toiletries, thanks to a grant from Texas Instruments. Homemade scarfs and caps were also tucked inside.

Veterans said the party made them feel special, if only for a couple of hours.

"Sometimes it feels like we're forgotten," Smith said. While he has family nearby, Smith said other vets do not. "This is as close as they'll have to a Christmas."
