Take A Look: It's In a Book

Stanford alumni club needs volunteers Saturday for literacy fair.

Are you a Stanford alum looking for a place to volunteer?

In an attempt to increase literacy rates in East Palo Alto, the Stanford Club of San Francisco has organized a family-friendly fair called "Reading Rainbow in the Park."

About 100 volunteers have signed up to pass out free books, paint faces and facilitate reading activities. But, the club still needs 30 more volunteers to help decorate, answer questions, and read to kids.

"You don’t have to be a Stanford alum to volunteer," said Marlayna Tuiasosopo, organizer of the event. "Anybody interested in helping is welcome," she said.

The event starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. at the Cesar Chavez Academy fields located at 2450 Ralmar Avenue in East Palo Alto.

"We’d love to have you all day, but we know people have lives," Tuiasosopo said.

You can sign up for one or more shifts. The ones available are from 8 to 11a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 1 to 4 p.m.

The goal of the event is to expose children to the joy of reading and the wide range of literature genres available to them. All youths attending will receive free books.

This is the second annual “Reading Rainbow in the Park” literacy expo. At the expo, families can learn about literacy resources in the community. There will also be a puppet show, poetry workshops and a Spelling Bee tournament.
