Marijuana Cleanup Volunteer Falls from 129th Rescue Wing Helicopter

The incident is under a multi-agency investigation.

A man who helped find marijuana grow farms in California's forests died Thursday after he fell from a helicopter, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, volunteer Shane Krogen fell from a helicopter piloted by the Moffett Field-based California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing.

"Shane’s dedication to California’s natural resources was extraordinary," said CDFW Assistant Chief John Baker. "He and his crew have worked tirelessly for several years to maintain access to the high Sierra for all Californians."

On this trip, Krogen assisted in a Tulare County marijuana cleanup operation.

The 129th Rescue Wing posted the following statement on their Facebook page:

"The men and women of the 129th Rescue Wing are deeply saddened by the loss of Shane Krogen. He was a good friend and champion for the reclamation of California's pristine wilderness. He gave his life to reverse the environmental damage resulting from illegal marijuana grow sites.

Our hearts go out to his family and friends. Shane will be missed by all of us."

The incident is under a multi-agency investigation, according to the CDFW.
